Prior to 1988, the Winston-Salem downtown churches
were actively involved in sheltering homeless people
on a rotating basis on their premises. With increasing
need for a homeless shelter, the downtown churches along
with the Winston-Salem community rallied support for
building the Samaritan Inn. The Samaritan Inn provides
homeless men with safe, temporary shelter for a maximum
of 90 days.
- The 69 bed homeless shelter for men, operates at
near capacity year-round
- Guests receive shelter, dinner and breakfast
- Samaritan counselors provide case management services
- In 2007, the Samaritan Inn provided 25,422 nights
of shelter to 998 unduplicated men
- One night of shelter including dinner and breakfast
costs $15.34
- Every night, the Inn requires a team of 10 shelter
volunteers
- Since opening in 1988, the Samaritan Inn has provided
over 515,637 nights of shelter
