Samaritan Ministries is an interdenominational, volunteer based Christian ministry in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. Serving hungry, homeless and people in need, 365 days a year, our programs include:

  • Samaritan Soup Kitchen, Winston-Salem’s only soup kitchen
  • Samaritan Inn, a 69 bed homeless shelter for men
  • Project Cornerstone, a residential substance abuse recovery program for men

The 1980’s

December 1980
First planning meeting for creating Winston-Salem’s first soup kitchen takes place at Crisis Control Ministry, led by Rev. Stimp Hawkins.

March 1981
Samaritan Soup Kitchen opens, serving lunch to 26 hungry people.

January 1986
Dr. Thomas Hinson and colleagues open a free clinic, the Samaritan Medical Clinic.

September 1988
The Samaritan Inn, a homeless shelter with 60 beds for men and 9 beds for women opens.

October 1988
First AA meeting held, proudly call the “Samaritan Group”.

The 1990’s

March 1992
The White House recognizes Samaritan’s volunteers and staff as the 710th “Daily Points of Light.”

September 1992
Salvation Army opens a shelter for women and children. The Samaritan Inn becomes a 69 bed men’s shelter.

June 1995
The 1 millionth meal is served.

October 1995
Samaritan Ministries’ resident substance abuse recovery program, Project Cornerstone begins.

March 1996
Project Cornerstone men form “Samaritan”, their first softball team.

July 1999
Samaritan Soup Kitchen reopens after completing a major renovation funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust.


The 2000’s

September 2001
Samaritan Inn is refurbished with funding from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust.

November 2003
The 2 millionth meal is served.

March 2005
The Samaritan Medical Clinic relocates to the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission.

October 2005
Project Cornerstone celebrates 10 years assisting men in substance abuse, employment and housing.

November 2005
The 2nd floor administrative offices are refurbished with funding from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust.

March 2006
The Samaritan Soup Kitchen celebrates its 25th anniversary as Winston-Salem’s Soup Kitchen.

September 2008
The Samaritan Inn Shelter celebrates its 20th anniversary.
